“Miss Ross was a great help to me and my children and my situation. She supported me by sharing her experiences with me and how she dealt with them. She helped me with resources for my children; she really cared. I am glad she worked with me and showed compassion and knowledge of what support I needed at times when I was really struggling mentally.” - Luisa

After nine years of incarceration Luisa* recently reunified with her children (ages 9 and 11). Even for someone with Luisa’s strength and commitment, reentry and readjustment to parenting are immense challenges.

Fortunately, Luisa was connected with a Family Support Specialist at A Better Way’s Another Road to Safety program (operated in partnership with Alameda County).

Luisa used our program to pursue 3 major goals:

  1. Family therapy – to help mother & children process their long separation and re-build relationships.
  2. Find an apartment - to provide a more stable home for the family
  3. Create structured quality time with the children – to ensure their new relationships thrive.

With help from our Family Support Specialist, all three goals were met! We helped Luisa find a family therapist who could support her family's healing journey. We walked Luisa through the house-hunting process to secure an apartment. We provided $1,983.48 to cover the cost of furniture; family-friendly community events & other essential resources. And we helped the children get new bikes – at no cost to the family – to power boost some fun and improve the quality time they spend with their mother.

Thanks to our Another Road to Safety program, Luisa’s new chapter is off to strong start.
